This ain’t comin’ from no prophet,
just an ordinary man. ~ Garth Brooks
Which do you relate to first?
Typically, people will respond to us in a more favorable way if we appear to be like them. So when you write a song that will be listened to by the “average Joe”, better to set the tone from the beginning. Makes sense. Got me interested in what he was going to say next the first time I heard the song. But is this really coming from just an ordinary man to reach other ordinary men?
I invite you to take a moment to reach beyond the words. Can you feel something beyond identifying yourself with the ordinary man? Maybe the next few words of the song would help guide you to that feeling.
When I close my eyes I see
The way this world shall be
When we all walk hand in hand
Doesn’t this sound like the words of a prophet and even more so, can you feel the vision? My mind would prefer that I think of myself as the ordinary man (well, woman). Yet when I go beyond my minds understanding of the words and reach for the feeling, I know without a doubt that I am the inspired teacher (prophet) and not the one without special or distinctive features (ordinary). I am special. I am unique. I am inspiring. And so are you. It is in each and every one of us. That power so great that it created everything we see and don’t see.
To use the title of this song, explore reaching beyond the limiting definition of words and simply use them as an invitation to reach for the limitless power within, then it just may be a world where “We Shall Be Free.”
