Our Monthly Trek Up the Mountain
Our Monthly Trek Up the Mountain. In an effort to not contribute anymore plastic to our earth, we signed up for water delivery to our home several years ago. We enjoyed it so much that even when we would go to Florida in the winter, we would set up water delivery service to the house we rented.
Then one day we noticed some green growth and some mysterious debris floating in one of the plastic water bottles.
Gross.
Dan did some research and located a spring about 20 miles from us. It is located on the side of a small road about 700 feet above sea level. There is very little parking (1-3 cars) and the lines can be long at times but the water that comes out of this spring is delightful.
At first we purchased a regular water dispenser (like any you would see in an office) and procured about 10 five gallon plastic jugs. We would drive up to the spring and fill our jugs and our individual glass water containers. We would enjoy our fresh spring water as we drove home feeling good about our conservation efforts.
I believe it was our daughter that first pointed out that the water we got in our personal water bottles tasted better than that out of the dispenser at home. We quickly surmised that the water out of the glass bottles was better than out of the plastic jugs. It tasted more like the handfuls we would drink straight from the spring.
Dan went to work searching again and came up with glass jugs that are typically used in home brewing of beer. We decided that with the increased weight of the glass vs. plastic that we would switch to three gallon containers and we purchased a new dispenser that didn’t require you to mount the bottle upside down on top but rather you set it inside the bottom of the dispenser and insert a tube that pumps the water up and out.
We now own 24 of these bottles and with seven people in the house, we usually drive to the spring about once a month to fill up.
Friends tend to look at us like we are crazy and are quick to point out how easy it is to have it delivered or buy it at the store. What they don’t see is that we enjoy this chore and the reward of fresh spring water is so worth the effort.
As you can tell from the photo, goofy pout is just for the camera. Spending time with her dad is priceless.
