“I am so confused. I don’t know what to do.”
Yep, it is time to take a break. A breath. Most likely you are trying to figure out how to get somewhere without knowing where it is you are going. You most likely have a fear that you either can’t or won’t access.
The fear is stopping you, but you don’t know that or you do and you are choosing to ignore it. Confusion arose to ask you to deal with the fear you are avoiding.
Even though a very famous marketing slogan suggests we do it anyway, despite the fear. Personally, I don’t recommend it. Honestly, very few people have that ability.
Fear enters our lives very early. Almost immediately after birth, babies have a fear of loud noises and falling. Quickly we pick up fears from our care givers about things that are dangerous and to be avoided. Unfortunately, we live in our world that sensationalizes horrific things and makes money by exploiting your fears.
We will do almost anything to avoid our fears (real and imagined). We definitely don’t want to ever admit we are fearful because doing so opens us up to being vulnerable.
Fear Brings Gifts
But what if fear was more than we were taught? It is.
Fear brings with it the gifts of intuition, focus, clarity, alertness and vitality. Not so bad. I wouldn’t mind any of those gifts. It also helps to bring all our faculties into the present moment.
Think about the last time you were home alone at night. The house is quiet and all of sudden you hear a noise. You know no one is home and immediately your fear kicks into high gear. With lightning speed you become silent and all of your attention is focused on listening and looking for a source of the noise. You actually talk to fear so fast that you don’t even notice it. You ask it what action you should take and it answers. “Hide.” or “Call 911” or “I think – it might be the cat.” Because you are listening, you respond to the answer you are given. Pretty cool, isn’t it?
Fear Assists in Healing
Fear can also assist you in healing trauma. Welcoming your fear and consciously moving through it can allow you to release all that has been stored up and gives you the opportunity to restore your resilience. By consciously replaying (not reliving, you already know that) but replaying it looking for new information. If you froze during the original trauma, you can run when you replay it. Finding a positive more triumphant outcome. It isn’t about lying to yourself, after all, you already survived it. It is about rebuilding yourself after the danger has past. It is about thriving rather than merely surviving. This even works for future events.

Fear does not have to be scary. It is your protector as it awakens your intuition and instincts. Alerts you to dangerous moves, protects you when danger is unavoidable and helps to restore you when the danger has past.
Thank you fear.
