“There’s no secret to Balance our lives. You just have to feel the waves.” ~Frank Herbert
Balance – An even distribution; a condition where different elements are equal; to keep or put in a steady position so that it does not fall.
I am not sure how life and balance ever got linked together. Life is not a steady position. Life is movement, growth and even death. I can think of no two things in my life that can be evenly distributed and that includes the love for my three kids. Nothing in life is equal, nothing. So why are we constantly trying to Balance our lives?
Sure it is important that we include a variety of things in our lives and we should be cautious of spending too much time at work and not enough time at home. But attempting to steady and stabilize our lives is wasted effort and energy.
When your child is an infant they require a lot of your time, sometimes to the point of the majority of it. When a family member is sick, we focus our attention on them and taking care of them. We start a new job or a new relationship, we tend to spend less time on our home or other friends as we get settled into our new thing. None of this is equal distribution or steady.
This quote is one I love because it encourages you to feel. When we can feel what needs our attention, we can go to that and give it what it needs. Then we feel again. Sometimes we don’t feel a tug for attention and we rest or just move gently. Just like a wave.
I like this image much more than that of me trying to move and position everything just to keep the distribution equal and the whole thing steady.
Can you feel the waves?
