Dan and I are both Reiki Masters and many people have no idea what that is. We didn’t know either until a few years ago. As many of you might know, Dan is a child abuse survivor and “Thriver” and it took many years and a lot of open mindedness to get to this point.
When healing from any trauma whether it be childhood abuse (as 1 in 8 children experience), from an accident, as a witness to a traumatic event, inherited trauma, bullying, being a part of a natural or man made disaster, sudden death of a loved one, military service or any other deeply distressing experience, every part of you is affected by it. What I mean is that you will have mental, emotional, spiritual or physical memories of this event. All of you processed and/or stored it in varying degrees of completion. All of this depends on all the circumstances surrounding, leading up to and following the event.
I believe that all of us have experienced trauma to one degree or another. This does not mean that any one traumatic experience is worse than another, but how we were able to process that event, in all areas, is what can become problematic in our lives. Unprocessed trauma, in any area or level, becomes a wound in need of healing, completion or even reinvention.
Dan had done work on his trauma in the mental, emotional and spiritual levels but it never even occurred to him that he needed to work on them at a physical level as well. The physical issues he had were easily explained by western medicine as poor nutrition, lack of exercise or even genetics and although those things play a role in our physical health, they rarely are the cause. They are the effect. Identifying the cause, or more specifically the root cause, takes some time and work on our part.
Alternative Healing Modalities
When conventional medicine was only able to supply Dan with symptomatic relief, we sought alternative healing modalities. This requires an open mind. In our culture, alternative medicine has just recently been acknowledged in mainstream circles and has a way to go before being accepted as viable options. After trying different avenues such as chiropractic, acupuncture, massage and nutrition, Dan did get relief but nothing felt complete. We then tried Reiki which in a simplistic definition is a healing touch using life force energy. Dan felt so much better that we decided to participate in Reiki training. This is where the real healing began.
We had no idea that by going through the training, we would uncover some of the deepest causes of his physical symptoms. We have made huge strides at getting to the root cause. I am not sure that I can put into words what exactly Reiki did for him (and us). I also don’t believe that Reiki alone got us to this point, but I do know that it was instrumental in the process. But I do know that something in this process allowed healing to begin.
Be Open to New Ideas
We want to invite you to check out all the wonderful healing modalities that are available and to allow yourself the opportunity to be curious and explore different options instead of thinking there are only limited ones or even none. Our bodies and minds are wonderful and really only want us to be happy, healthy and whole. It is our own resistance that causes blocks and impedes our growth and healing. You never know what might bring that thing you have been longing for. In Dan’s case, peace. Knowing he can achieve that at anytime has brought tremendous healing.
Where can you be open to a new or different idea? What is stopping you from exploring?
